He used his position as a GAA coach to actively stalk his victim. How they can deny he was a coach is incredible. It's the usual GAA trick of simply denying everything and anything that doesn't suit them. All that on-field and off-field violence at bogball games? Never happened. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Should get ten years in Mountjoy – but will more likely end up in some cushy open prison where he can ponce around in the library all day.

Regarding his '2 attempts at suicide'. Pity at least one of those wasn't a few years back, we may have got into Tallaght a lot sooner.

This is a very disturbing case. You have a guy who was very powerful and well known in GAA/Sportswriting circles, and he deliberately targeted a young child, and rumoured to be more, for his own sexual gratification. He knew exactly what he was doing and he also knew what he was doing was wrong and illegal, yet he continued to groom this girl. There are no mitigating circumstances in this case. The GAA have been very silent on this and really need to examine their Child Protection Policies. Humphries got involved with coaching young girls for completely the wrong reasons, and in my opinion, is a vile, repulsive man who deserves NO sympathy. Its my opinion that if Humphries was coaching soccer there would be a bigger deal made of this, but I feel there is still a "he was a great GAA man" train of thought which has lessened the criticism in some quarters.

Beggars belief how there could be any mitigating circumstances in a case like this that would prompt any reasonable person to write in support of this individual.
I was gobsmacked when I heard this also. Sure it was his family that got the authorities involved when a phone was given to one of the kids, which put a stop to the abuse but... For a reasonable person to go and pen a letter of support.. Just wrong.

Considering his wife reported him to the Guards how anyone could write letters of support defies belief.

This case was somehow kept totally buried for years.

My belief is that some powers within the GAA managed to influence and delay matters in the hope that people would eventually forget that we are talking about one of the GAA's greatest ever propaganda-meisters.

And the delay for the victim was complete and utter torture.

But that's irrelevant of course, in the greater scheme of things.

The supporter from the Sunday Times who wrote this letter is claimng mitigating circumstances because he wrote it before the paedo pleaded guilty. Apparantely the letter stated that not only was the paedo the finest journo in the business, but also 'a great human being'. Makes you sick.

David Walsh. He wrote the article exposing Lance Armstrong as a drug cheat.

Mr Walsh has previously lauded Humphries, singling him out for praise in his book 'Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong', published in December 2012. In the book he wrote of being inspired by Humphries's work, describing him as "by some distance, the most talented sports writer I've ever read. A fine man, too"

The letter from the hurler was also handed in to Judge Karen O'Connor on Tuesday. Mr Hartnett said it detailed voluntary work Humphries did. The barrister said the GAA figure was "extremely shocked and disappointed" by what had happened.

If someone I personally knew was involved in what humphries did. I don't think Shocked and Disapointed would be anyway near the words used to describe how I would feel

He must've taken a break from insinuating every/any sportsperson is/was/will be doping. Anything else gets lost in that noise.

Walsh now says that in spite of what was done he felt he owed it to Humphries to write the letter as they had been friends for many years. Yet when asked about it last week he said he wrote it BEFORE Humphries pleaded guilty. Huge difference. What a cunt.

David Walsh rang me in 2012 and said he was involved in setting up a sports magazine, essentially for the benefit of Tom, who couldn't work.

Christ. Wasn’t TH arrested in 2012? Walsh is now toxic through his own dealings. Madness
